I’ve reached the stage in life where I spend a lot of time thinking about how I can be kind to myself. I don’t say this indulgently; it’s more that I’ve honed my awareness to a point that I listen in, take note and make choices accordingly.
Perhaps this is the simplest and most powerful form of self-care because if we stop to really think about it, care is the greatest motivator of all. I think it’s also a consequence of shunning the have it all message that was sold to millennials at the peak of hustle culture.
Actually, no: it’s coming to realise that having it all is being able to work creatively despite inconsistent income, parent with realistic levels of patience, eat nourishing food and rest when I need to.
Of course, we’re easily convinced that wellbeing is complicated and requires exact quantities of protein, sunlight, kale, sleep and water to be worthwhile.
I think it’s simpler than that. And it has to be simple when life tends to be complicated.
