If you want to live with less, you must learn to savour.
I don’t say ‘must’ often because it’s a bit preachy and no-one needs that kind of authoritative messaging in their lives. However, I really do believe that learning to savour is essential to a simple life; to intentionally living with less and finding the good in what you already have. Less wanting and more cherishing of the small, ordinary things. Looking for the good; romanticising!
In one of my favourite picture books — Totally Wonderful Miss Plumberry — Miss Plumberry (very obviously Steiner or Montessori based on her colourful felt slippers) cradles the main character’s crystal and admires it from all angles. She pays attention to the shape and the colour, how it feels in her hands and how it looks in the light. Every time I read it to my youngest, I’m reminded that a small shiny rock is actually a wonderful, precious thing if you look close enough. As Miss Plumberry says: “this crystal is totally wonderful.”
I think this is savouring.
