Welcome to Practising Simplicity,
a newsletter about reading, writing and the simple things by bestselling author, Jodi Wilson.
I’ve been writing online in some capacity for 20 years, mostly about motherhood, simple living and the small steps I’ve taken to live with more space and less clutter. My work has been published by The Guardian, ABC Lifestyle and print media.
I’m the author of three books, including Practising Simplicity - small steps and brave choices for a life less distracted, which details my family’s choice to sell most of what we owned and travel Australia in a caravan. It was a decision made on a whim - the best 180 degree turn I’ve ever made - and after two years on the road, we settled in a small town on a small island. Life is pretty slow here but I’ve also got four kids, so I juggle my writing life with parenting, cooking and far too many odd socks.
I write from the corner of my loungeroom in a simple house that works hard to keep the six of us (and our border collie) warm and cosy. I send a newsletter every Sunday where I write about living well (with enough but not too much stuff), simple habits and the ordinariness of everyday life. I’m an advocate for rest, daily walks, and a good cup of tea. If you want to catch up, there’s over 100 letters waiting for you.
Five years ago I made a decision not to work with brands on social media. It wasn’t an easy decision to make - content creation does pay bills - but I felt uncomfortable writing about simplicity and also promoting products you likely don’t need.
This is why I advocate for writers being paid for their work and it’s why this platform has made a significant difference to my life.
My new book, The Complete Guide to Postpartum - a mother-focused companion for life after birth will be published internationally in mid-2025. If you’re after specific motherhood content, I also write a weekly letter to new mums over at
.Thanks for popping in here. Hopefully you’ll subscribe and stay a while.
