Pottering is so nourishing for my soul. A while back, after reflecting on the effects of a day of pottering at home (completely unplanned), I decided I needed to make this a regular occurrence. Sometimes it happens organically, other times I intentionally schedule it in by clearing my schedule to make space for it. For me, it's "soul care". Revitalising, refreshing, soothing.
Your posts are the highlight of my Sunday morning!
I love a good potter, and am in need of one. I often forget the way my soul and spirits are lifted after pottering about, and the inevitable burst of creativity it unleashes.
It's definitely best done when I'm alone at home so I'm going to set some time aside to step away from my desk this week on one of the days my partner is working on site.
I'm already feeling excited at the thought and looking forward to it!
I LOVE pottering. I woke up early this morning thinking about a number of projects I wanted to complete today but having done the same yesterday, have decided today needs to be a gentle one. Pottering it is!
i love nothing more than a good few hours or miracle of miracles a whole day to potter, but I've found myself in the last few years, if i am honest, wasting this most percious of time on my phone or laptop. Which of course frees the inner mean girl to really arc up. I've got one word to say to myself, boundaries!
Don't you love it when you are way down the library list and unexpectedly you receive notice that it is your turn. Or when i find it on the 7 day shelf and i know i have the time to read it that week.
Thanks for the book recs, I’ve already torn through Six Square Metres and The Wedding Forecast this week thanks to you! Hot tip for those happy to read on phones or kobos: you can add multiple libraries from which to borrow books, check out whether libraries allow non-residents to join when you’re on holidays anywhere. Greatly increases your chances of finding an available copy!
I recently discovered Nina Stibbe at the most opportune time. I had to travel interstate a few times to see a specialist and listened to 'Love, Nina' on audiobook - read by the author in her beautiful English accent - and it was such a balm. Funny and utterly absorbing in its everydayness. I instantly felt like I knew these people. Have since heard that it was a TV series with Helena Bonham Carter, adapted by Nick Hornby which feels kind of perfect.
Oh I love a potter! I find it hard to be in the right mind frame for a proper potter, I have to really consciously turn off my whirling to do lists but it is always so worth it (sometimes I forget how worth it). And thank you for the link to the essay on Elizabeth Strout! I look forward to reading that.
Thanks for sharing a couple of books on your reservation list Jodi. I love knowing what other readers are reading 📚! Loved your thoughts on pottering too. Why aren't we talking about this simple joy more xx
I try to spend at least one day a week pottering around the house, doing as little as possible. I care for my granddaughter for three days, then have the rest of the week for my own doings, and some days, a whole lot of nothing is exactly what I need.
I love your comment on getting crafty when your mind feels tangled, it definitely works for all ages. It’s something that I come back to when my oldest little one (almost 3yo) is a bit lost. Give her something to do with her hands, I think. Cracking eggs, play dough, painting, holding mine and taking deep breaths. More often than not it helps us both feel grounded and more present, probably more me than her some of the time.

Revitalising is a great word for it x

Thanks so much, Jenny. I hope you get your pottering day very soon x

I do love the 7-day express service. And you’re right; pottering is better screen-free x

I have a day of pottering ahead - bliss x
A tv series! I had no idea! I’ll tuck it away for a time when I need some comfort viewing x
I absolutely love a potter, and I do like the sound of Blue Hour too! Might have to add that to the summer reads list.
Lots of writers recommending it which is always a good sign. And I bet your border collie follows you as you potter; mine definitely does x
Ha! Yes she’s my constant shadow 🖤🤍

Yes to pottering and tinkering and all the little things we do just because that's what our soul needs. A lovely post, thanks Jodi

Also, pottering is up there with my most favourite things. I dream about it and look forward to some time to potter at home whenever I can.
